MannKind and Rose Pharma Announce Deal for an Inhaled Weight-Loss Drug

What Is Happening
Rose Pharma, the company developing the experimental weight-loss drug ROSE-010, has agreed to use inhalation technology owned by MannKind to develop a version patients could breathe in as a dry powder. The companies announced the worldwide agreement on September 9.
Rose Pharma receives exclusive rights to use MannKind’s technology for this drug and remains responsible for clinical testing, seeking approval and eventual sales. MannKind will help formulate and manufacture the inhaled medicine through an early human study, called Phase 1b.
In exchange, MannKind receives an ownership stake in Rose Pharma and royalties—a share of any future sales of the inhaled drug. The size of the stake and royalty rate were not disclosed.
The partnership combines Rose Pharma’s drug with MannKind’s way of delivering medicine to the lungs. The companies want to test a weight-management treatment that acts quickly for a short period. Whether the inhaled version can do that safely and effectively still requires testing; it is not an approved treatment.
