Lilly Starts Construction of $6.5 Billion Houston Drug Plant

Updated 23 September 2026

What Is Happening

Eli Lilly said it began construction of a $6.5 billion drug factory in Houston on September 21. Lilly is the drugmaker investing in the plant to expand its own manufacturing capacity. The amount describes the planned factory investment, rather than revenue from selling medicines.

The plant is intended to make active ingredients—the substances that produce a medicine’s treatment effects. These include orforglipron, the ingredient in Foundayo, Lilly’s once-daily weight-loss pill. Foundayo is a GLP-1 medicine approved in the United States for eligible adults; it acts on a hormone pathway involved in appetite and blood sugar.

Lilly says the project forms part of its U.S. manufacturing expansion and will support more than 600 permanent jobs and 4,000 construction jobs. Those are expected benefits of a factory still being built, not additional medicine supplies already available to patients.
